MONROSS Trailblazer Gavin Jones stormed home third in the seven-mile Steam Bunny Stomp fell race near Pontypool on Saturday.

The 2,000ft ascent run takes in three steep climbs and descents around the mountain valleys of Mynydd Maen Common.

Two of the early frontrunners took a wrong turning after the first checkpoint and finally made it back to the finish in a taxi.

But Gavin was up to the challenge, outsprinting Griffithstown’s Lewis Grant by just two seconds to cross in one hour two minutes 23 seconds, just 12 seconds back on second-placed Emlyn Owen of Eryri Harriers.

James Blore of Chepstow Harriers took overall victory in the sunshine in a lung-bursting 57.33.

MonRoss runner Chris Fletcher placed 16th and fourth-fastest over-50 man in 1.14.21, with club mate Rob Potter two places back in 1.15.53.

James Fletcher was also 29th in 1.25.27, one place and 36 secs ahead of Grant White.
