On Team GB's Super Saturday August 4th Ross on Wye CC First XI travelled to Old Hill for their Worcester League Division 4 fixture. Ross captain Stuart Mair lost the toss and Chris Round (Old Hill's captain) had no hesitation in asking Ross to bat first on a wicket that looked like it would very difficult to score runs on.
The Ross openers, Jack Evans and James Tiffen, set out to set up a solid platform for Ross to build on. However, the Old Hill bowlers had other ideas and with the score on 20 Jack Evans (8) was the first wicket to fall. Tiffen was joined by Jack Donovan, they moved the score on to 44 before Donovan (14) edged a ball to the Old Hill's wicket keeper. With the score on 56, Chris Round introduced himself in to the bowling attack with immediate impact, taking two wickets in his first over. Charles Hiram joined Tiffen at the crease and they set about rebuilding the Ross innings and quickly built up a partnership. With the score on 109 Tiffen hit the ball to Mid-On and set off for quick single only to be run out with a direct hit to leave him short of his ground by half a metre (57). Ross continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 140. Pick of the Old Hill bowlers was their skipper Chris Round who ended up with figures of (13-0-34-5) with Omar Lewis also picking up 3 for 63.
After the tea interval Ross knew that they had to attack from the very first ball. Opening bowlers, Harry Porter and Charles Hiram quickly got in to their stride with good tight lines. It was only a matter of time before their hard work would start to pay dividends. With the final ball of the ninth over Porter claimed his first wicket when he had Dereham (8) caught by Jack Evans with the score on 34. The very next ball, Hiram claimed the other Old Hill opener, Genders (24), when he was caught by Dave Long. Three balls later Hiram claimed the next wicket when Preece (0) was well caught by Tiffen. Porter not to be out done then claimed his second and third wickets of the match in his next over. Old Hill had lost 6 wickets for 5 runs. Bruno Warwick was then introduced to the bowling attack, with the rain starting to fall, both sides tried to play through. The score had moved on to 75 when Nathan Davies (30) skied a ball from Warwick to Harry King at Mid On. With the rain continuing to fall, the players left the pitch for 15 minutes. As soon as the rain and stopped both sides were eager to restart play. Within two balls of the restart Warwick had King (1) caught by Cinderey with an excellent catch behind the stumps, to leave Old Hill on 75 for 9. Ross didn't have to wait long for the final wicket to fall; as the Old Hill batsman went for a quick single, Jack Evans fielded the ball brilliantly, unleashing a throw straight in to the gloves of Cinderey to run out Ali (2) with the score on 77.
Ross won by 63 runs to move them up to second position in the league.
This was a golden performance by the Ross bowlers who all got in the wickets, Porter 3 for 21, Hiram 4 for 31 and Warwick 2 for 6.
