Ross Golf Club’s Huggett Putter annual knock-out event is in its fifth year after Brian Huggett, the non playing Captain of the Great Britain/ Ireland Team in 1977 kindly and generously initiated it.
Throughout the Summer, 87 members from all sections have been taking part in the 18 holes putting knock-out competition with members vociferously supporting the dedicated 2018 Semi-Finals and Finals night in great style.
For 7 handicapper Danny Gear, he was making his 3rd attempt to be crowned the Club’s Huggett Putter Champion, having been a losing semi-finalist in 2015 and 2017. In the first semi-final Danny faced the emotional challenge of defeating his golfing pal & 2018 Ernest Penn Cup winner, Robin Henderson-Pugh and the handicap differential meant that Robin started with a 2 holes up advantage. In a good spirited encounter it was Danny who achieved his objective at the 17th hole to reach the Final to add to his popularity standing among his highly supportive fan club followers.
In the second semi-final, 5 handicapper, 15 year old Harry Griffiths, was aiming to make it a Ross Juniors double after his Juniors Captain Liam Grieg captured the title last year. The omens looked promising after Harry adapted well to being in the spectators spotlight to win through to the final on the 17th hole against 8 handicapper James Hay in another intriguing contest.
To the credit of both Harry and Danny the quality of putting in the Final was worthy of the occasion and a perfect start saw the opening 3 holes decided by single putts. In maintaining his composure and focus throughout, Danny eased in front to leave Harry the task of single putting the 18th hole to take the match into some play-off holes and which Harry just failed to do.
Brian Huggett and his wife, Winnie were delighted to attend the prize-giving and in presenting the Trophy to Danny, Brian thanked all members who had taken part. This included Head Professional Tim Hall and his Assistant Pro, James Dobbs for their 9 holes putting demonstration as part of the evening’s festivities with James just getting the better of his mentor on the night.
