The Mens’ Senior golfers at Ross-on-Wye Golf Club found good reasons to celebrate recently following the success of their Round Robin team in the 2016/17 League of matches played throughout the winter. Teams from Burghill Valley, Leominster, Sapey and the Worcestershire Golf Clubs also take part.
In the shared care of Captains, David Williams and Steve Martin, their teams’ successful performances, in winning four of the eight matches played, and halving one was just enough to see them top the final league table. This means the winners’ Claret Jug will spend the next 12 months in the Ross Clubs Trophy cupboard.
Since joining the League in 2008 this was only their second success, the last occasion being when former Seniors Captain Patrick Curtis was at the helm. He is still involved in matters as Match Secretary with Wref Digings.
Some social golf and lunch resulted in five friendly fourball matches being enjoyed and witnessed those who represented Seniors Vice Captain David Price being victorious by four matches to one.
A few days previously RR squad member Charlie Walker, a 10 handicapper, had somehow further enhanced his golfing reputation when his eight iron shot to the Ross Club’s seventh hole was inch perfect, to give Charlie his first ever ‘hole in one’. His name has been logged in the Club’s Hall of Fame.
Charlie was taking part in the first round of the Trevor Lane Knock-out Cup, against Martin Pimlow, although Martin was not to be overawed by his formidable opponent scoring a 2/1 victory.
