The latest major to take place at Ross Golf Club's Gorsley based "hidden gem" tree lined course was the annual Mike Lane Trophy, held over two days and supported by 90 members despite the extreme weather conditions.

The blue riband event, held in honour of the club's fondly remembered former men's champion, is specially coveted by the club's leading low handicap players.

Not for the first time since head professional Tim Hall introduced the Junior School of Golf in 2012, the club's policy of investing in young players proved a standout success as 18 year old James Sayce delivered phenomenal performances over 36 holes of medal play to become the youngest champion in the history of the honours board event.

After the opening round, Martyn Walker, Matty Dobbs and 2025 Ross Juniors captain Oli Walker shared the lead on 76, with Sayce, Alex Duncanson and Jason Bolton one shot back on 77.

The second round saw Sayce produce the only under par round of the weekend with a 71, featuring three birdies. He was particularly pleased to remain calm and in complete control throughout the final nine holes, completing them in level par.

His winning total of 148 secured victory.
