ROSS Golf Club’s Huggett Putter annual knock-out event is in its 4th year after Brian Huggett, the non playing Captain of the Great Britain/ Ireland Team in 1977, kindly and generously initiated it. Throughout the summer 106 members from all sections have been taking part in the 18 holes putting knock-out competition with members vociferously supporting the dedicated Semi-Finals and Finals night in fine style.

The Finalists represented an eclectic mix featuring the accomplished 7 handicapper Danny Gear pitched against 16 year old Juniors Vice-Captain Liam Greig, who is in his first year with the Ross Club. The other semi-final saw two experienced Seniors campaigners in Tim Fewell and David Rees aiming to make a name for themselves. Ultimately the highly supportive spectators were treated to a high quality youth v experience final in which, despite the sense of occasion, 9 handicapper Liam Greig was able to maintain his composure to leave Tim Fewell having to be satisfied with the consolation of being runner-up. This latest success for Liam completes a highly remarkable season which enabled him to receive several trophies at the Presentation evening which followed the putter final two days later, including the ’Most Improved Player of 2017’ award. All this puts Liam in a great place to kick-start furthering his interests in the game as a possible career as he commences a two year Sports Diploma accreditation at Hartpury College.

Members were also treated to the Huggett ’Professionals Putter’ final which featured Ross Juniors Captain 17 year old Cam Haines, now a 3 handicapper making his second successive final appearance having been the runner-up in 2016. This time Cam was able to emerge victorious and despite his opponent and mentor Oli Leett, the Ross Club’s Aimpoint putting specialist giving his very best, Oli could not avoid ’the influence of youth’ again being the evening’s ultimate winner.
