South Herefordshire Golf Club has just reached the end of its winter season, having enjoyed some exceptional weather for golfers, and a course that has been in great condition throughout, for the time of year.

The Seniors Section played three main competitions during the winter period. The Seniors Winter Pairs competition was won by Barry Howells and Keith Nind snatching victory on the last hole with a glorious long putt. In contrast, the Winter Singles competition was won by Vin Kilty with a rather safer margin of 7 and 6, playing against Laurie Cork.

In addition there has been a Winter League competition played as pairs and running throughout the season with a different format each month. Each match has had a winning pair and then overall winners with a cumulative score. The overall winning pair this year is Mike Boutcher and the Seniors’ captain, Bob Chance, who managed to defend their lead in the last match but had to keep looking over their shoulders for those who were creeping up behind them!

The season was brought to a close with a Seniors and Ladies match, again played in brilliant weather and followed by lunch. The format was Texas Scramble and the match was won by Jan Howe, Elaine Wood, Terry Gibson and Bob Chance.

Now it is back to summer rules, playing off the proper tees and looking forward to a busy season of home and away matches as well as club competitions.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
