Ross Golf Club’s Annual 16 hole stableford event, to decide the winner of the Peter Carton-Kelly Cup, to determine the No 1 ’Veteran golfer’ among their men members in the age 75 and over category, attracted 23 stalwarts on what proved to be a reasonable Autumn day for golf.

Former Club President, Neville Ovens was a popular winner when his name headed the final results table in 2015 and Neville was able to repeat the achievement when his 33 stableford points score was just enough to deny runner-up Cec Wheatstone from completing a hat-trick of Cup wins in recent years. Brian Ingram surprised himself and his countless friends by claiming the prize for the best performing octogenarian.

A few days later witnessed 164 golfers from far and wide descending on the Gorsely based Club to take part in the Club’s Annual Seniors Pairs Open for Over 55 year olds, and this time Cec Wheatstone was not to be denied featuring in the day’s top prizes award. Playing with his golfing pal, Stan Jones, a member of the Worcestershire Golf Club, near Malvern, the pairing’s impressive better-ball 45 points score won them the top-spot. Cec will have smiled knowingly when the 16th hole, which proved Cec’s undoing in the Over 75’s event, yielded the pair a crucial birdie in the Open.
