Ross Golf Club’s Annual Autumn Scratch and handicap medal, in which 107 men members took part, was the final major in its Summer programme. This provided the opportunity for 10 handicapper James Hay to record his best performance of the season.
James’s highly impressive gross 77 medal score, which saw him complete his front nine holes in one under gross par, resulted in his name finishing ‘No 1’ on the final score-sheets, for both gross and nett categories.
James said that he was able to account for his fine performance upon the weekly practice schedules around his short game, as recommended by the Ross Club’s ‘School of Golf’, fronted by Head Professional Tim Hall and his Assistant Oli Leett. This now means that James has a single figure nine handicap.
In the gross scores category, 16-year-old Cam Haines, playing with a five handicap, continued his exceptional season to finish runner-up with a 78.
Cam was followed by 79s by David Daniels and Warren Darrell, Steve Wallbank with an 81, and 82s by Mike Merrick and Martyn Print.
Martyn is another member to finish his season on a high, having completed two Trophy knock-out successes on Championships Finals Day. There, he won the Hospital Cup in the morning against Stephen Gregory, and the Cinderford Pairs Cup in the afternoon when partnering Duncan Jelfs in getting the better of the Ross Club Captain, Warren Moore and Joe Irvine.
In the Autumn Scratch and Handicap nett category, there were noteworthy performances by Steve Naylor with a 69, Phil Wilson 70, Kingsley Matthews 71, Nigel Montague 72, and 73s by Phil Bull, Nigel Evans and Elwyn Hamer.
The following day, at the Annual Ross Juniors Open, where 30 aspiring young golfers from far and wide took part, Cam Haines added to a highly impressive golfing record of successes by recording a gross 75 medal score. He took the Trophy and saw his handicap reduced to four, another step forward to achieving scratch status.
Cam also headed the nett category with Sabrina Thompson-Green, from the Cotswold Hills Golf Club, in the runners-up spot also with a nett 70. Other Ross Juniors who would have been pleased with their day’s performances were 12-year-old Timmy Fycun, with a nett 71 and 13-year-old Abbie Bishop with a nett 74.
