As the final few weeks of the Ross Club’s Summer programme for its Men Seniors members (60+) draws to its conclusion crucial competitions and knock-out matches will decide the 2018 Cup Winners which includes coveted honours board recognition.

In the penultimate 5th round out of six to be played for the Annual Layton Cup which is decided on the total of the best three rounds played, 106 members took advantage of the ideal playing conditions. 22 handicapper Paul Dando certainly improved his chances of being in contention in scoring an impressive 42 stableford points to top the final score-sheet and incur a 2 shots handicap reduction.

Despite one blemish on the par three 12th hole, Paul’s haul of 7 pars and a birdie gave him a comfortable win with 12 handicapper Tim Rigden maintaining his recent consistency with 40 points to be runner-up. Tim was followed by Chris Good with 39 points and Trevor Flowers, Jeremy Picton-Turbervill, Bill Knapper and David Peacock with 38 points each. With the 6th and final round imminent although Robin Taylor with a three rounds total of 113 points heads the table, there are several players who could catch and overtake Robin being Steve Martin & Club Captain Robert Tuttiett with 112 points and a host of others including Michael Archer, Doug Pell, and David Beavan.

In the annual Layton Eclectic Cup which is nett medal based to inspire the lower handicappers, Charlie Walker heads the league table on the eve of the final round, with Barry Robbins and John Hartle in close pursuit.

The Men Seniors annual Trevor Lane Knock-Out Cup, in which 75 members entered originally in April, is also heading towards an exciting climax when on Club Championship Finals Day being Sunday, September 2nd, Bill Johnston will take on Jeremy Picton-Turbervill over 18 holes. With full handicap differential allowances applying, while Bill as a 22 handicapper will take a distinct 8 shots advantage into the match because Jeremy is currently playing to a 14 handicap, any final is considered a 50/50 affair and a close contest is anticipated.

It is assured that Men Seniors members will also be in contention on Finals day to decide who takes the 2018 Harold Bradley Trophy where 36 members all with handicaps of 18+ entered way back in April. This is because the results of the all seniors semi-final matches featuring Geoff Baker v Nick Swan and Gethin Jenkins v David Every will determine the ultimate line-up.

David Every will be hoping to repeat his 2016 Final win in the same competition and Geoff Baker aiming to make amends for finishing second best in the 2015 Trevor Lane Knock-out final.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
