The annual Saxons v Celts ’Ryder Cup’ event was reduced to a singles competition because of the adverse weather conditions on the 1st day of the scheduled event. There were 52 participants and the captains, Fred Cook & Malcolm Connah, began the proceedings in a very friendly manner, halving their match.
There were five further halves and the Saxons were leading by one point when the final pair came down the 18th - all square. They approached the final green not knowing the significance of their match. Phil Andrews was on the green in two, Chris Burgess a stroke behind. Phil, however, three putted, leaving Chris a putt to win their match. When the ball lipped the hole he fell to the ground in disgust - a half.
The crowded balcony gave them an ovation before Phil was hailed a hero by his team mates, holding the senior’s club champion and retaining the cup for the Saxons 13 - 12. However, the result could have been different if two fair weather golfers had not had to abandon their match on the ninth. An excellent buffet ended off a very enjoyable day’s golf.
