With ‘The Masters’ having come and gone and with the sun showing signs of warming up the golfers for the first time this year, South Herefordshire Golf Club can look forward to the golf season for 2019.

The course is looking in extremely promising condition for the season thanks to the new green staff putting in such hard work at this crucial time of year.

The Men’s section is flourishing with increasing numbers taking part in the early competitions. Particularly successful are the re-invigorated Saturday morning roll ups and Wednesday evening club night with a friendly drink and food supplementing, or replacing, the 9 holes of golf depending on how well some may play. They have also seen a very successful start to the Handicap League matches with an away win 3.5 - 2.5 at Leominster, a home win 4.5 – 1.5 against Halo and a home draw against Burghill. A very encouraging start to the year by all members of the team led by Paul Stone, which shows promise for further success throughout the summer.

Similarly, it is very pleasing to see the growing numbers and competitors in the Ladies section with their new captain Sue Chance. In addition to the club competitions their early friendly fixture away to Brickhampton was an ideal opportunity to give members who are new to golf some experience of inter club matchplay. Although defeated 3-1, this provided a lot of enjoyment and useful experience for the future. It also reflects the success of the group sessions for Ladies run by Paul Middleton. These are available to anyone interested in getting into golf and begin at 5.30pm every Tuesday. Just come along or ring the club for details.

Meanwhile well done to two more experienced members, Jill Wargen and Lyn Relph on defeating their opponents from Celtic Manor in the first round of The Daily Mail Foursomes.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
