SOUTH Herefordshire Seniors held their annual Gary Martin Trophy competition last week, with Tony Hawker-Bond coming out on top.
The stableford competition, held on Wednesday, August 13th, saw 60 members take part.
Tony Hawker-Bond scored 43 points to take the trophy and it was presented to him by Gary Martin’s widow, Ruth. Brian Carver finished just behind on 39 points with Bob Hill taking third spot, also on 39 points.
The team prize was won by the trio of John Duvall, Ray Moore and John Arrowsmith, with a score of 84 points, beating Chris Burgess, Keith Nind and Tony Hawker-Bond by just four points.
Since Gary’s death, a tree on the approach to the 12th had to be felled, it always caused problems as it managed to interfere with the second shot onto the green so a ’Ghost Tree’ marker was placed to see who could get closest to the ’Old’ tree, the nearest was Ken Tolley. Nearest the pin on hole seven was Ashley Letts and the longest drive was won by Richard Hammett.
John Duvall, the seniors captain, thanked all who had taken part for their support and especially Ruth for attending and donating the prizes. The day was a very fitting way to remember such a stalwart of the club, especially the seniors section.
The seniors team managed an away win against Rodway 4-2. There were wins for Ken Tolley & Mick Proctor 5&4, John Barnett & David Rippe 1up, Eifion Rees & Richard Hammett 3&2 and Malcolm Connah & Brian Spencer 6&5. The pairings of John Duvall & Fred Cook and Roger Watkins & Tony Haile lost 3&2 and 7&6 respectively.
