ROSS Golf were delighted to host their first-ever Adult/Juniors Open Championship recently and with 42 pairings taking part, the standard of play was a joy to watch, with some exceptional scores recorded in both better-ball and individual competitions. Clearly the future of Junior golf in the Wye Valley is thriving.
St Pierre Golf member, Joe Benetiz and his daughter Sofia, who is coached at the Ross Club’s Juniors Academy, were the day’s Open Champions scoring a quite remarkable 51 stableford points. Thanks to sponsorship from some of Golf’s Top National organisations, Joe and Sofia can look forward to a high value VIP day as guests at Ping’s European Headquarters in Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. Forest Hills GC member Ben Roberts, playing with the Ross Club’s in form 14 year old Matty Dobbs, were runners-up with 50 points, followed by Ross Club Captain, Kim Hampson, with another Ross Club in form Junior player, Jay Greig also with 50 points.
For 14 year old, Jay Greig, it was a day he will long remember, having only joined the Ross Juniors Academy in May this year with a 40 starting handicap which has plummeted to 25, largely thanks to the Tim Hall School of Golf’’ ’continuous improvement’ coaching and training culture. Jay’s individual nett 64 medal score in the Open Championship made him the day’s top Junior performer on count-back and he was able to take home a Powakaddy Golf Trolley as his prize. Jay was followed by another 14 year old, Phoebe Barber, also with a nett 64, and nine-year-old, Cam Hughes, with a nett 65.
