LEGENDARY goalscorer and all-round football wizard Matt Le Tissier wowed members and guests at Ross-on-Wye Golf Club’s first ever sports legends evening recently.

With Harry Kane’s penalty woe in the World Cup in Qatar, England could have perhaps done with ‘Le God’, who scored 47 out of 48 penalties in top-flight competition and is regarded as the best spot-kick king of all time.

The former Saint was voted Eurosport’s best ever Premier League player ahead of the likes of Thierry Henry in 2020, having been the first Premier League midfielder to score 100 goals and winning regular Goal of the Month and Season awards.

Those at the dinner enjoyed a first class three-course dinner while listening to the England cap, who also spoke at a sports night hosted by Ross Juniors FC last year.

Matt was joined by the sports host and entertainer Richard Cracknell, and the evening was finished off with an auction raising funds for the future development of junior golf at the club.

A club spokesperson posted: “Huge thanks to everyone involved especially to the members for supporting and donating so generously.”

Meanwhile, the final event in the annual programme of the Ross Golf Club’s men’s 55+ seniors section witnessed a 76 full start-sheet for their Xmas Singles 16 holes stableford competition, reports KEITH RAY.

The event on the Gorsley-based course blessed with appreciative winter golfing conditions helped by excellent greens.

And Peter Shaw was able to reproduce the form which has made him such a keen competitor for many years including achieving honours board recognition, and his 40 points score won him the day’s top prize.

He was closely pursued by runner-up Robin Smith with 39 points followed by Robert Beavis 38, Andy Corbett 36 and Ian Kitchiner and Nigel Evans 35 who all won prizes.

Other scorers who performed with credit were Mike Credland, Jeremy Picton-Turberville, Tim Rigden, Nigel Montague and Graham Weare.

Wref Digings, 2022 Seniors Captain paid tribute to the club’s caterers Ian and Karen Needham and family for the splendid Christmas lunch enjoyed.

The section will be in the care of Chris Good in 2023 and the forthcoming season as customary will contain many meaningful opportunities.as those who achieved honours board status during the past 12 months will testify.

The top 2022 Seniors Champion spot was earned by Steve Woods and others who can reflect upon a special year were Peter Bennett, Geoff Bent, Jason Bolton, Phil Bull, Robin Butler, Mark Button, Brian Cartwright, Tony Fletcher, Graeme Forrester, Tim Harrison, Robin Henderson-Pugh, Andy Moszczynski, Colin Price, Don Punnett, and Tim Rigden.

There will also be a place for recognition when either Scott Thomson or Ray Freeman emerges as the Layton Cup winner.

That Phil Dicks will still be at the helm in 2023 as Match Secretary for the seniors’ programme of friendly matches will also be welcomed.

Phil’s astute management and strategy was particularly influential in the squad only losing four out of their 28 match Summer schedule in 2022.
