Goodrich ’A’ttitudes travelled to Worcester to take on their ’B’ team ladies on Sunday, August 12th, competing in the final match of the summer season for both sides.

Owing to holiday commitments, Goodrich were short of some of their regular first team players, so it was Bonnie Palmer and Wendy Jenkins who were put in as first pair.

Despite dropping the first set, 3-6, they battled hard and went on to win the next two sets 6-3/6-2, taking the first rubber.

Their second rubber followed a similar pattern, going down 4-6 in the first set. However, they turned it around in the second set, winning it 6-0, despite the Worcester ladies swapping service ends in the hope of an early advantage.

The third set proved much tighter, but again it was Palmer and Jenkins who triumphed 6-4, much to their delight.

Second pair, Kim Martin and Steph Howell, did not take long to wrap up their first rubber against the Worcester third pair. After achieving 6-2/6-2, they quickly retired to the club house out of the rain that had begun.

Their second rubber, against the Worcester first pair, required Kim and Steph to spend more time on the court. They lost the first set 0-6, but their fighting spirit, and a lot of vocal encouragement from Kim, saw them take the next set 6-4, and the third set 7-5.

’A’ttitudes third pair, Jill Brown and Kirsten Mathews, had a very long first rubber against the Worcester second pair. The first set reached a tie-break which went the way of Goodrich, but Worcester came back strong in the second set, winning it 6-2.

Another tight third set resulted in a tie-break, this time going the way of the Worcester pair. After a short break it was time for Jill and Kirsten to play the Worcester third pair who proved too strong, taking the rubber 6-4/6-4.

Overall, it was a brilliant result for the ’A’ttitudes, and it moved them from sixth place to fourth place, their best finishing position in Division three of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer league.
