On the evening of Wednesday, May 30th, with the floodlights switched on due to the damp and murky conditions, Goodrich ’C’hasers played host to Wellington in Division 6 of the H & W Summer League.

First pair Lesley Winters and Kayla Coopey, playing together for the first time in a match, started promisingly but as the Wellington ladies adapted to the carpet surface they slowly edged ahead and won the rubber 6-3/6-1.

Established second pair Shani Courtney and Debbie Trigg faired better, winning the first set 6-4, then had a slight wobble in the second losing it 4-6, but managed to get themselves back on track and win a very tight and tense tie-break in the third set, 10-8.

In the second rubber Lesley and Kayla did not get off to a very promising start, going down 1-6, but turned it around in the second set to win it 6-4. Going to a tie-break in the third set, it was Lesley and Kayla’s turn to feel the tension, and eventually lost 9-11, but enjoyed the tennis against good opposition.

Meanwhile, on the other court Shani and Debbie were unable to repeat their winning performance in the first rubber and lost the second rubber 0-6/2-6.

The ’C’hasers picked up their first points in the league and are now looking forward to their next match on the morning of Sunday, June 17th, at home to Leominster ’B’.
