Ross Rowing Club’s junior squad continued their ambitious start to the ‘Head’ season with a successful trip to the Thames to take part in the historic Weybridge Silver Sculls. It is the oldest sculling event on the non-tidal reaches of the Thames. Around 450 crews take part in this event each year.
Against some of the very best opposition in the Thames region, Ross came away with one first place and four second places as their high performance scullers put in some very fast times over the tricky 3k course.
Emily Hermon won the WJ15 1x event against the might of several Tideway Scullers athletes amongst the twelve competitors in this age group. Heidi Brodholt and Yasmin Howe both achieved two second places; one each in their singles (WJ16 and WJ14 respectively), and another each with their doubles partners Lara Banks-Martin and Niamh Gabb.
There were also encouraging performances from Ben Clatworthy, Cameron Roberts and Ellie Lown.
The next event for the Junior Squad is at Gloucester on October 28th, which will be an opportunity for those planning to trial for GB later in the year to compete over 5k on the canal.
Following that will be the famous Henley Sculls on November 10th where the juniors will be joined by senior squad members.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
