It has not just been British riders at the Tour de France demonstrating success over the last few weeks. Ross and District Cycling Club has reached the busiest point of the racing season with several notable achievements.

Last weekend Ross rider Hefin Jones took part in the national 24 hour time trial run by Mersey Road Club on a course close to Wrexham. This is an extreme endurance event for the hard men and women of cycling, based simply on how far an individual is able to ride in 24 hours.

Hefin who is in training for the famous 'Race across America' needed to ride the significant qualifying standard of 400 miles to gain entry. He achieved this, with time to spare, and in doing so set a new club record finishing with a remarkable total of 408 miles.

The previous weekend the Club hosted its annual open 10 mile and 25 mile time trial weekend. This is the equivalent to the Ross Rowing Regatta and this year attracted over 120 entrants from around the region.

The 10 mile course saw numerous local riders claim personal best times, just five seconds separated the three top Ross riders, Hefin Jones 22mins 34 secs, Paul Fallon 22mins 37 secs and Graham Carter 22mins 39 secs. The overall winner in a new course record was Keiron Davies from Bynea CC in 19mins 39 secs.

The 25 mile event witnessed similarly fast times with winner Tom Ward finishing in 53mins 52 secs riding for event sponsor Echelon cycles, Pershore, who provided generous prizes. Many thanks goes to all those associated with the Club who put in hours of work planning, marshalling, baking cakes and selling teas and coffees.

With some better weather the regular Thursday evening club time trial series is beginning to see some faster times; last Thursday on the Old Gore 10 mile course Will Bevan took top honours in a season's best of 23 mins 30 secs.

With calm conditions staying for the next few weeks all riders times will begin to improve, this week sees the club take on the Walford course to Lydbrook and back. You don't need to be a racing cyclist to ride and the Club welcomes all newcomers to give it a go meeting at Walford school from 7pm.
