MORE than 170 girls from across Herefordshire, including participants from the Ross-on-Wye area, were supported through two major “Here Girls Can” festivals aimed at boosting confidence and increasing physical activity.

The events, delivered by Stride Active and backed by Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire, took place in Hereford earlier this year and provided a safe and inclusive space for girls to try a wide range of activities. Young people from Ross and surrounding communities were among those to benefit from the initiative.

Across the two days, a total of 176 girls and 28 “Girls Champions” took part. The Champions, older participants who have previously attended, returned to mentor younger girls and help build confidence.

Activities included yoga, dance, kickboxing, cheerleading and skating, alongside “Girls Talk” sessions designed to break down barriers to sport. Organisers say the programme has already encouraged some attendees to join local clubs and school activities.

Beky Williams, Managing Director of Stride Active, said the events continue to inspire girls to get active in a “fun, judgement-free environment”.

The initiative forms part of the wider “This Girl Can” campaign and aims to ensure more young people in communities like Ross-on-Wye develop a positive relationship with sport and physical activity.
