YOUNG gymnast Iwan Scriven took a brilliant bronze competing for the Wales men’s artistic gymnastics team at the North European Championships in Finland.

The Monmouth Comprehensive School student, who won the Welsh overall U18 title earlier this year, produced a great performance on the pommel horse to take third at the prestigious event in Jyväskylä.

Iwan, a member of Fusion Gymnastics in Pontyclun, qualified for the pommel event with a top six U18 finish at the British Championships in Liverpool.

And he scored a total of 12.900 to make the podium alongside Scottish gold medallist Cameron Lynn (13.733) and Finland’s Elias Koski (13.566), with Wales team-mate Sam Morgan fourth (12.666).

Other nations competing at the Northern Europeans included England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Jersey and the hosts.

And while the bronze was the highlight for the men, Iwan and his team-mates Sammi Morgan, Michael Tang, Harrison Harris, Theo-Amari Ochana and Henry Lewis tied with England for fifth, with Finland, Scotland and Iceland taking the top three slots.

It ended a brilliant year for Iwan, who took gold in pommel, parallel bars and high bar, and a bronze on rings when winning the overall Wales U18 title back in February.

Monmouth Comprehensive’s PE department posted: “Congratulations to Iwan who represented Wales senior team at the Northern Europeans in Finland and picked up a bronze medal on the pommel. Da iawn!”
