It was a lovely sunny day for the ‘Paul Hulett Memorial Cup’ which was held last Saturday at John Kyrle High School. This annual tournament is an U16 Boys singles event which was established in 1988 in memory of the former pupil and originally took place at the South Hereford Lawn Tennis Club, where Paul played his junior tennis. Alongside the tournament, Chris Friend also organised an U12 Boys & Girls round robin competition.

In the U12’s event, all eight players competed against each other in a ‘quick tennis’ format thus ensuring every competitor had seven matches. Emma-Louise and Morgan, both Ashfield Park pupils, finished with six wins each and therefore a deciding match was played between the two players. Morgan managed to hold his nerve and claim the win despite a close fought match which was entertaining for the crowd.

Other competitors in both events were Noah M, Dylan D, Will H, Alasdair H, Harry R, Jack D, Jack B, Billy W, Alex H. Ben R, Kira C, Bethany G, Riley, Martha F, Aiden F. and Holly D

The presentation of the U16 Cup was made by John Hulett, who complimented all the juniors on the standard of their play and gave a brief history of the trophy. Prizes were presented together with the Memorial Cup. A big thank you to Carol Cherepanov who kindly arranged the refreshments with the help of all the parents including hot dogs and homemade cakes.See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
