A group of 11 John Kyrle Gym members participated in the 12 mile Black Mountain Challenge, starting at Llantony Priory, on Saturday, May 14th, a challenge which raises money for the Longtown Mountain Rescue team.

The team decided to take part in this event again, after the success of last year. The rationale of taking part in this event is that it’s an attainable goal for all, whilst keeping members motivated towards fitness aspirations through the winter months.

The walk started before 9am, in the shadow of the mountains. The walk took participants from Llantony Priory up to Bal-Mawr, which is a staggering 1991 feet above sea level. Participants then walked along the ridge and eventually back down in to Capel-y-ffin. Following this the group had to walk back along the Offas Dyke path, which to get onto was an extremely challenging climb (and crawl) of 2306 feet above sea level.

With an emphasis on strength training and different fitness principles throughout the gym sessions and classes, the team were able to manage the challenge with relative ease.

After such a good day in the mountains, it seemed only right to finish the day off with a pub lunch at the Old Court in Symonds Yat, near Ross-on-Wye.

The members are now looking at organising a ‘Three Peaks in Three days’ event which would be open to anyone with a keen interest in walking, or wishing to improve their fitness.

John Kyrle Gym is open to the public Tuesday and Thursday 5pm-9pm and Saturday 9am-2pm.
