THE junior rowers from Ross Rowing Club continued to build on their recent successes, winning five medals at the Peterborough Junior Championships on Saturday.
Again, it was the youngest of Ross’ rowers who made the long trip to Cambridgeshire in search of top opposition from all around the country and came away with an impressive gold medal, silver medal and three bronze medals.
The gold medal was won by Heidi Brodholt, beating 15 crews in a very competitive WJ13 single scull event and continuing her impressive run of form.
In the same event, Mia Davies sculled superbly to come third and win a bronze medal, only seven seconds off the silver medal position.
A development quad of Niamh Hickey, Emily Hermon, Tom Gianessi and Joshua Quan-Buchanan (coxed by Elsa Sykes) also won a bronze medal in the J13 quad event, delivering a brave row against J13 boys, despite being a mixed crew of J12 scullers.
The WJ15 and WJ14 quads continued their preparations for the Junior National Championships in July with solid performances in their events, with the WJ14 crew winning a bronze medal and the WJ15 crew just missing out on a medal, coming 4th overall.
Towards the end of a very long day at Peterborough, a Ross Octople Scull took to the water crewed by eight WJ12 and WJ13 scullers in the WJ13 Octo event.
Two of the crew were J12 rowers, and a further two, only started rowing in April this year, so the Ross contingent were absolutely delighted with their dazzling performance which brought a wonderful silver medal in a fitting climax to the day, in which they managed to beat the heavyweights from Headington School and Kings School, Ely.
Tom Gianessi coxed this big boat masterfully and declared himself “extremely satisfied” with the performance of the crew.
Ross’ junior rowers are off to Kingston Borough Regatta on Sunday, July 10th, again in search of high performance opposition from the London area.
