Angela Sonn, 56, from Ross-on-Wye, bagged a silver medal, and set two personal best (PB) times, while competing in the European Masters Athletics Championships Stadia (EMACS), in Aarhus, Denmark.

This competition was Angela’s first time competing abroad, although she has taken part in countless athletics tournaments in the UK.

Angela came third in the individual 100m heat, qualifying for, the final and also came third in the 200m heat, although this time was not fast enough to qualify for the final. Unfortunately Angela was not placed in the finals. However, she won a silver medal as part of the 4x400m relay.

Angela told the Ross Gazette that taking part in such a large competition was a fantastic experience. The European Masters took place over two weeks, and during that time Angela saw many age-related world records and European records smashed. She said she was honoured to meet a 93-year-old Portuguese runner, and there were several pole vaulters and long jumpers who were in their 80s taking part.

The atmosphere was brilliant and very emotional at times, Angela said this was especially true when she secured her PBs and also when she was presented with her medal. Germany won the relay and France was third.

Angela’s triumph helped Great Britain secure second place in the medal table, behind Germany. See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here.
