South Herefordshire Golf Club held their annual Men's Club Championship at the weekend where a strong field came together to compete for the prestigious title of 'Men's Club Champion' in the two-day event.

In tough conditions 63 players competed on day one with scores ranging from 75 up to 112. At the end of the day Phil Hill was leading on 73 closely followed by David Barnard on 75, Steve Bennett 76 and Paul Campbell on 77. This is a 36 hole event so it was all to play for on day two.

The players were greeted with the course playing at full length and some difficult pin positions but Phil Hill held his nerve to take the Championship with a fine 75 making his overall total 148. David Barnard narrowly missed out adding another 75 to his score leaving him on 150. 17 handicapper Martin Gwynne picked up the Nett trophy with two rounds under his handicap on a total of 134, with 7 handicapper Matt Stone 5 shots back on 139. Play was followed by a BBQ, presentation of prizes and handicap reductions for 16 players.

Results: Overall Gross: Winner Phil Hill 148, Runner Up David Barnard 150. Overall Nett: Winner Martin Gwynne 134, Runner Up Matt Stone 139. Round 1 : Nett Winner Neil Vanstone 69, Gross Winner Steve Bennett 76. Round 2 : Nett Winner Dale Powell 69, Gross Winner Matt Humphries 78.

On Thursday the Senior's Section held their invitation day. Half the field had started before thunder and lightning halted play. Several coffees later play resumed, and Rod Duncan and his guest Tony Cope of Puckrup Hall enjoyed the afternoon sunshine the most, their score of 43 points making them the winners of the day. Brian Foley and Anthony Morgan (Pyle & Kenfig) were second on 41 pts, closely followed by Pete Sawyer and Mike James (Westerham) with 40pts.
