A group of serious Petanque players who are keen to introduce the sport to more people and ensure it can be played more often have taken on the challenge of transforming the disused tennis courts at Ross Sports Centre.

Roger Williams, George Tait, David Knott, Gerald Frances and Graham Cull said that the courts are an ideal location, they are secure, they will be able to play all year and will provide a base thus saving a great deal of money normally needed for setting up new petanque pistes.

As the area will solely be used for Petanque there will be no restriction about when the members of the club can play. Roger also explained that it is a very inclusive sport. He said most people are introduced to it on holiday or play something similar as children on a beach, it can belayed by any age or those with limited mobility and it is a very sociable sport. However, it is also taken very seriously, there are 19 clubs in the Herefordshire League.See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
