After an excellent season for Ross-on-Wye Ladies Hockey it all came down to the final game against Blockley to see who would be promoted. It was one of the toughest matches of the season with the tension building throughout the match. Blockley needed the win, Ross needed to draw or win.
And by the end of the game Ross had secured a draw which was enough to seal their promotion to West Clubs Severn 2.
Ross started the game brightly with Jess Element, Olivia Mace, Rebecca Hayes and Kim Calland controlling the midfield.
It was 0-0 at half time but Blockley piled the pressure on at the start of the second half. However, the defensive unit of Holly Bee, Carolyn Carver, Charlie Yemm, and Kath Taylor-Jessup held firm, and Kate Williams in goal made some crucial saves.
Ross fought back and an excellent run down the left side saw Laura Samuel cross the ball in for Sophie Rushe to score. This was her 15th goal of the season and she is the team’s top scorer.
Ange Jones, Lucy Perkins and Eloise Oubridge-Brock continued to drive the play into the Blockley half. With 10 minutes to go Blockley made a tactical change, bringing on a kicking back to give them an extra outfield player.
They pushed forward and eventually got the equaliser, but they needed the win. The last two minutes were tense but Ross stayed composed and at the final whistle a score of 1-1 was enough for Ross to earn promotion. A special mention goes to Ross team captain Kim Calland, who has led the team superbly all season.
