Ross Cricket Club's First XI team played their first match of the season on Saturday May 12th at Barnards Green. On losing the toss Ross were asked to bat first on a damp, drying wicket. Openers J Tiffen and Seb Warwick set about creating a platform for the Ross innings. Tiffen (20) was the first wicket to fall when he was bowled by a ball that kept low with the score on 53 in the 15 over. H King joined Seb at the crease. Seb (30) was the next wicket to fall. H King took up the mantle and kept the innings moving with some intelligent batting and powerful strokes before he too found himself in the pavilion (37). Skipper S Mair (17) and H Porter (25*) produced a partnership of 41 towards the end of the innings which meant that Ross completed their 50 overs with the scoreboard on 178 for 9. Pick of the Barnards Green bowlers was C Hill (3 for 36 off 17 overs) and A Banks (3-48).
After the tea interval Ross took to the field knowing that they needed to take quick wickets and to get into the Barnards Green batsman as early as possible. In the first five overs, Ross gained their first wicket when H Porter had Baddley (1) brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper E Cindery diving to his right. Next to go was Loader (5) again to the combination of Porter and Cinderey. The Barnards Green batsman started to rebuild their innings and put on 90 runs before Thompson (40) was stumped by Cinderey off the bowling of Tiffen. Barnards Green opener Ratcliffe (54) had passed his half century when H Porter had him trapped LBW in front of his stumps. The remaining Barnards Green batsman provided little resistance to a determined Ross bowling attack. The final wicket fell with the score on 141 when S Tucker clean bowled Banks (2). H Porter took six wickets to return great bowling figures (14-2-36-6) and was ably supported by J Tiffen's tight bowling (17-5-39-3). Ross won by 38 runs. This was an excellent team performance by a determined Ross side with every player contributing to win the match.
