The men at Ross-on-Wye Golf Club will be celebrating in style, after they were recently awarded their fourth team trophy of the year.

The most recent addition to their trophy cupboard was awarded following their recent win at the Gloucestershire Golf Union’s Annual Presidents Cup, which saw 30 teams from across the County take part.

The format was pairs foursomes handicap knock-out matches with teams of 10 players with a minimum aggregate handicap of 90.

After wins in the earlier rounds against their counterparts from Broadway GC 5-0, Cleeve Cloud GC 3.5-1.5 and Chipping Sodbury GC 4-1, the Ross team, in the care of ‘A’ Team Captain Neil Lancett, visited Filton Golf Club in Bristol to contest the final stages with Semi-Final and Final matches played on the same day.

After a satisfying 3-2 win over reigning champions Tewkesbury Park Golf Club in the semis, the Ross team overcame Sherdons Golf Club, also 3-2, in the final to win the President’s Cup for the first time in their history.

With Club Captain, Clive Whitson unable to take his customary place in the team on Finals Day, team Captain Neil selected 12 year old Harry Griffiths; one of the Ross Club’s aspiring Juniors Academy players, and this proved to be an inspired decision.

In both matches, when the teams were level 2-2, it was Neil and Harry who provided the crucial winning point with victories of 2 holes up and 4/3, with Neil describing Harry’s play throughout the day as being “nerveless.”

At Filton, with the remaining Ross points on the day being scored with wins by James Morgan/Matt Hillier 3/2, Joe Irvine/Niall Powell 6/5 and two wins by Tim Wyatt/Colin Bennion, 2 up and 3/2 who were undefeated on the day, then it was only David Webb/Mark Whitmore who were unable to finish on the winning side of the Ross score-sheet on this occasion.
