After losing in Bristol, last time out, it was critical that Ross got back to winning ways on Saturday and they ran out comfortable winners against Aretians, 44-14.
Ross asserted their strong running game from the off, with Casey Morgan and Dave Green punching holes in the visitors defence. Ross were able to get on the front foot from the off, and it was only a matter of time before they opened the scoring. From a scrum on halfway, Ollie Floyd broke off the back, popped the ball to scrum half Craig Powell, who put winger Billy Hambling in the clear, he drew the cover defence before putting in a well timed inside pass to Ollie Floyd, who raced clear to score. Craig Powell converted and Ross were 7-0 ahead.
For the rest of the half Ross continued to look dangerous with ball in hand. Outside half Chay Brine ensured his outside backs got good ball, but Dan Field, Eddie Ruck and Craig Smith could not deliver that final try scoring pass, so only a Craig Powell penalty was added and at half time the score was 10-0 to Ross.
Ross added the crucial missing ingredient of accuracy in the second half and with it came the tries. Chay Brine continued to move the ball wide and, in the third quarter, captain Dan Field and centre partner Eddie Ruck were able to find fullback and wingers Huw Bellamy, Billy Hambling and Craig Smith. Craig was the beneficiary of some slick hands and he quickly added two great winger scores, which put Ross 24-0 ahead. The away side rallied with two scores but after some sustained pressure in the visitors' twenty two, Dave Green was driven over by Casey Morgan to put Ross 29-14 ahead. Another Craig Powell penalty stretched the lead to 32-14 and in the last ten minutes Mike Chandler and Chay Brine added two further scores that Craig Powell converted to give Ross a comfortable 44-14 victory.
This result has put Ross back in top three in the league standings.
Next Saturday Ross 1sts are away to league leaders Bredon Star in a 2.30pm kick off with the 2nds in league action away to Stourbridge Lions. The GMP Web Design Man of the Match was Mike Chandler for another aggressive display in attack and defence.
