Ross ladies played at home to Gloucester 4 on Saturday January 28th. Under the watchful eye of coach Kristian Franklin Ross Ladies were keen to continue their winning streak and they did not disappoint. The first half saw some exciting play with Gloucester starting strong and scoring an early goal.
Unfazed by Gloucester's early advantage Ross attacked hard and were rewarded with great play from Vanessa Ball and Steph Barclay in midfield. Within minutes of losing the advantage Ross brought the score to 1-1 with an outstanding goal from Pauline Hemingway. Ross continued to keep up the momentum and Kate Handley was instrumental in creating some creative play in order to allow the forwards, Louise Cross and Katie Williams to make some impressive runs.
Upping the pressure with some outstanding passing (which is credit to the coaching prowess of Kristian Franklin) Ball took the opportunity to storm through the Gloucester defence and scored an impressive goal. This pressure continued and Angela Wesley and Liese Brady fought hard to keep the ball driving forward. Such determined play enabled Ball to make a well-timed pass to Kate Cameron who skilfully knocked the ball into the goal. Gloucester's frustration was clear for all to see as they struggled to make any real impression on the game.
Utilising Ross' speed of play through their skilful passing, Hemingway achieved her second goal of the match taking the score to 4-1. It wasn't long before Rebecca Heyes adding a fifth goal with what was arguably the most impressive goal of the match. After half time Ross returned to the pitch but seemed to lose some of their vigour. Gloucester took advantage of this and managed to get pass the Ross defence and score their second goal of the match. Ross were committed not to concede any further goals which could be credited to Gill Badham and captain Loz Stephens who admirably took up the challenge of playing in goal. Unfortunately, Ross were unable to maximise on the advantage given to them by their skilful defenders and sadly missed several opportunities on goal. That is until Carly Morris created the opportunity for Pauline Hemingway to score her third goal of the match taking the final score to 6-2.
Next week sees Ross playing at home to Newent 2. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend training on a Tuesday evening at Monmouth Boys School Astro Turf at 8pm.
