Ross-on-Wye B Ladies Tennis Team played their second match of the Hereford and Worcester Winter League at home against a really friendly Hallow team.
The Ross first pair, which consisted of Gaynor Raine and Heather Peachey, got off to a slow start and managed to go 1-4 down before they started to settle into the game.
The opposition’s consistency and high deep lob shots on what was a cold and damp day were difficult to finish off, with Gaynor and Heather both getting frustrated by the lack of pace.
The Ross-on-Wye pair eventually pulled it back, but they narrowly lost 5-7 4-6 against the Hallow first pair which proved a touch match.
Ross’ second pair, which consisted of Sandy Foulkes and Lynn O’Driscoll, fared a lot better and got straight in to the swing of it, they were a strong side.
The established pair made sure that they mixed things up with plenty of drop shots and good ground stokes, which left the Hallow second pair failing to convert their chances. They were delighted, and Ross-on-Wye took the rubber in straight sets 6-4 6-3.
After a quick turnaround, Gaynor and Heather this time got straight down to business and, despite some very good lengthy rallies, Gaynor’s top spin forehands started to take their toll against the Hallow pair. This meant that the Ross side managed to come out as the winners, 6-4 7-6.
Sandy and Lynn also started well against the opposition’s first couple going 4-1 up.
Hallow however changed tactics and started their fight back soon and soon started catching up and winning the set.
Lynn and Sandy went on to win the second set but the Hallow first pair took the final set after playing a tie break.
Thankfully, after some well-fought matches and enjoyable play, the Ross-on-Wye team ended up with a winning draw thanks to the extra set that had been taken by Lynn and Sandy.
The two teams then headed for lunch in the newly refurbished tennis centre where they made the most of the new heater which warmed everyone up. The teams also made the most of the new cooker and kitchen facilities that have been put in place for their home. They enjoyed soup and other goodies.
