Ross Badgers travelled away to Stroud on Saturday, February 27th and, for once, the weather played little part in proceedings. Even the sun made a brief appearance to illuminate what was, in the end, a pretty rampant display.
As with all the clubs Ross-on-Wye encounter, Stroud are a much larger unit with an almost limitless supply of talent at their disposal. However, whilst Ross at present do have some exceptionally gifted players, the main focus is on team work; with everyone constantly encouraging each other and working hard throughout the seventy minutes’ game time.
At the heart of much of the best play were the precocious duo Rory Calderwood and Dan Mills, with their long pinpoint passes and drag-flick shots on goal. Both Obrock’s; Archie and Freddie, masterminded the midfield with confidence and alacrity. Upfront Ben Topping and Carys Williams continued to shine, as they have all season. However, nothing must be taken away from the other players who performed more than just a bit part in this masterful orchestration. Luke Watts, in particular, will soon emerge with the assuredness of touch and steel in the tackle.
Captain for the day, Rory Calderwood decided that the South Hereford Motorcaravans player of the match award should go Ella Burton for making her presence felt in front of goal.
This week, Ross are at home, with an 12 noon start, at Monmouth School Sports Club against a good Sherbourne team who pushed them all the way back in November when they first met. Before then, training continues at Monmouth Leisure Centre on Monday evenings - commencing at 7pm. Anybody interested in playing is welcome to attend, whatever your ability.
