Ross-on-Wye Rowing Club’s junior and senior competitors took a large raiding party across the border into Wales to take part in Monmouth RC’s Winter Head event on Sunday, December 11th.

A total of 61 rowers, young and old, took part across two divisions of racing on a glorious, sunny day – coming away with 19 medals from four wins (pictured).

The first win came from a mixed senior quad of Mike Jones, Nicki Wild, Sarah Sykes and Dave Sykes, and this was quickly followed by a win for the J14 boys’ quad of Jayesh, Ben, Josh, Cameron and Niamh (cox). In the afternoon division, there were further wins for the WJ14 girls’ quad of Mia, Emily, Ella, Henny and Josh (cox), and the WJ15 girls’ quad of Lara, Daisy, Nia, Imogen and Alastair (cox).

Ross Rowing Club has always welcomed new rowers. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the numbers of new senior members in the Development Squad and this was evident in the three senior eights competing at this event.

On the Saturday, a small squad of high performing junior rowers made the journey to Walton-on Thames to take part in the Small Boats Head. There were some highly promising performances at this top event which attracts 700 crews from around the country.

The stand out local performance was from Lara Banks-Martin in the WJ15 single scull event in which she overcame no less than 39 other scullers to secure an outstanding win.
