Ross Rowing Club’s senior and junior rowers loaded two trailers with boats and headed to Evesham for the annual early-year regatta and sprint event. This draws crews from rowing clubs up and down the country keen to get in early competition in the regatta season.
Four wins were recorded: two on Saturday and two on Sunday. The first win featured the WJ15 quad of Nia and Imogen Ryan, Lara Banks-Martin and Daisy Phillips – coxed by Alastair Green – who beat national silver medallists City of Bristol in the first heat. They went on to win their semi-final and final in good style to win the event.
Also coxed by rising star Alastair Green, the WJ14 quad had to win no less than four races to win their pots. Emily Hermon, Heidi Brodholt, Lucy Burden and Katie Smith powered through the first three races to earn the right to race AB Severn (national Gold medallists) in the final.
As the light faded, the Ross crew just managed to prevail, to the delight of the large and enthusiastic crowds who had travelled from Ross to support all the club’s rowers.
On the Sunday, Emily Hermon swept her opposition aside to win the WJ13 single scull event to complete a two-pot weekend, and Elsa Sykes continued her impressive winning form to again put her opposition to the sword in the WJ16 single scull event.
The two days were characterised by some hugely promising performances from both junior and senior rowers, and the club is confident that one of its best seasons lies ahead.
