RONIE Thomas, who represented John Kyrle High School, qualified for the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) 70cm Showjumping Championship at Rectory Farm on September 16th, 2017.
Ronie won her qualifying class of 54 competitors, having to come in the top two to qualify for the championship’s held at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre, Buckinghamshire.
It was an early start on Thursday, October 19th, with a long drive to Addington. They arrived in time for the second course walk of the day, and with 43 teams and 41 individuals, it was going to be a long class. Competitors had travelled from all over the UK, including Kelso in the Scottish borders and Dyffryn Conwy, North Wales.
Ronie and Didi rode a fast round on a very bendy course which secured her place in the top eight individuals, who would then jump off against each other in the indoor arena that evening. Ronie and Didi were the last to go in the jump off, having to go clear and beat the fastest time of 35.70 secs. They flew around the course twisting and turning tight to the finish, stopping the clock on 34.39 secs, giving them the title of NSEA 70cm Individual National Champions.
This was a great end to the season for Ronie, winning the British Show jumping ‘Just for Schools’ on her pony Bobby, so this double achievement is fantastic.
Ronie and her family would like to thank Jilly Baker, owner of Didi, for allowing Ronie to ride her, and John Kyrle for supporting those who take part in the school competitions.
Anyone at John Kyrle can compete in the NSEA. For more information, contact Mrs Russell in the school, or Zoe Thomas by email:
