Worcester Sprint Regatta is one of the last of the racing season and is held on a 500 metre course in front of their boathouse on the Severn. Of the 44 events held during Saturday, Ross Rowing Club senior and junior crews competed in 22, providing lots of interest to those who came to support the competitors on a lovely warm and sunny day.
By the end of racing, Ross Rowing Club had won nine events with the Junior girls being the most successful with wins for their J15 coxed quad, J14 coxed quad, J13 coxed quad, J13 double scull and Novice double scull. There were also three Ross vs. Ross finals. Harley Kernot beat Elsa Sykes in the Women's J12A single sculls and the Ross A crew beat the Ross B crew in the Mixed IM3 coxed eights. However, to demonstrate how competitive the younger club members can be, there was a thrilling battle between the two women's J13 coxed quads ending with a win for the Ross A crew, by just a canvas.
The Junior boys only success was Nicholas Burden beating Trent in the J15 single sculls. Unfortunately, the Ross J16 coxless quad was disqualified due to a course steering error in a closely fought race against Kings School Worcester. And the J14 double scull lost to Cardiff & Vale School by just three feet.
The only senior win was for Jeremy Picton-Turbervill who beat opposition from Marlow to win the Masters F single scull event.
Club supporters and parents made themselves useful helping the Juniors rig and carry boats and the club is indebted to Jim Pettipher and Clive Newey for towing the trailers.
