After the wet weather put paid to round one, the Market Towns' Sevens Tournament got underway on Friday night at Ledbury, with Luctonians, Bromyard and Ross making up the teams. Each side hosts a round with the final being played at Greytree in Ross on September 2nd. Each team played the other sides once with the host's side putting up two teams.
Ledbury opened proceedings against Ross, and found both the physicality and pace of the Ross game too hot to handle, with Ross running out easy victors, four tries to one. Luctonians then easily defeated Bromyard and Ledbury A showing they were going to be dangerous opponents for Ross.
Ross managed their squad of 12 well ensuring all players got enough rest and this proved decisive as they went on to record comfortable wins against Bromyard and Ledbury A. Billybob, Gavin Oates, Chay Brine and Olly Floyd all weighed in with some great tries.
Luctonians continued their winning streak and this set up a winner takes all encounter against Ross. This was a hard fought encounter, twice Ross thought they had taken the lead but on both occasions the referee brought them back for infringements. However in the end Ross were too physical and eventually the Luctonian's defence cracked and Gavin Oates scored the decisive try to win the game and the opening leg of this tournament.
Training is in full swing down at Greytree every Tuesday and Thursday 6.45pm so whatever your level come on down and join in, Ross is a community club, committed to developing players' skills no matter how young or old, social or first team player you may be.
The next leg of the Market Towns Tournament is at Luctonians on August 3rd.
