Ross Cricket Club U9s did their club proud on Sunday with a fantastic win over Canon Frome in the final of the Herefordshire Championships. Ross, unbeaten winners of the South Herefordshire Division, won by 158 runs, beating Canon Frome who had overcome Bartestree and Lugwardine in the deciding game of the North Division.

Batting first, Ross scored 168 runs in 15 overs, losing just one wicket at the cost of eight runs.

Given the starting score of 200, the final total of 360 was a tough challenge for Canon Frome to chase.

Alistair Cook emulated his namesake by top scoring with 27 from just nine balls. This included four sixes, three coming in one over. Ethan Lerego made 22 runs, and Matthew Morgan scored 21.

Good bowling and fielding restricted Canon Frome to just 202 runs. Six wickets were taken including two run outs and one wicket each by four bowlers, Adam Davies, Alex Springer, Harry Friend and Luke Bond. Henry Green, Rob Nixon and Adam Parkes helped to pressurise the visitors with excellent fielding.

Therese Warwick of Ross Cricket Club said this was a marvellous achievement for the team.

Brian Nixon presented the runners-up and champions medals and presented the Herefordshire Cricket U9s shield to Harry Friend and the team.

The Ross team was captain Harry Friend, Adam Davies, Ethan Lerego, Luke Bond, Rob Nixon, Alistair Cook, Henry Green, Matthew Morgan, Adam Parkes and Alexander Springer.

All players contributed to this victory with the bat and ball.

Other players that have played in the previous games this season include Jed Sarjent, Maverick Lilly, Theo Mayell and Michael Nixon.

Coaches Brian Nixon and Philip Davies plan to have a series of friendly games to give more members of the U9s section match experience.
