Amidst the daffodils, bluebells and wood anemones the Lady Golfers of Ross-On-Wye Golf club played the Spring Meeting Major Competition on Tuesday, April 26th. The weather was a mixture of hail, rain and sunshine but this did not deter the golfers. The day was a success, made so by the determination of all players to beat the course….and the weather. Over 80 ladies took part in the competition, and returned some remarkable scores, given the conditions.
The South Herefordshire Seniors Spring Cup attracted 64 entrants. The weather was kind, however only 5 members managed to achieve the course standard scratch or better reflecting the difficult conditions on the day. The Seniors managed to avoid a whitewash at Woodlake Park thanks to the half achieved by Barry Howells & Ken Tolley. The final score 7.5 - 0.5 to the home side.
BRIDGE
Members at a well attended Ross Bridge Club AGM were both inspired and humbled to learn of the bespoke support to disabled horse riders being provided by ’Ride 2 Achieve’ which is part of the Horse Riding for Disabled National Charity and operates from the Duchy based Redbrook Farm in Hoarwithy.
RALLYING
Two weeks of hard work by Bob Morgan paid off when he took the Winner Garage Cinderford backed Skoda Fabia Evo to an excellent class win on last weekends Somerset Stages and finishing 14th overall.
CRICKET
With the 1st XI fixture falling foul of the weather at Himbleton, all attention turned to the reverse 2nd XI fixture at The Park. The players of both sides are well known to each other and, unfortunately for Ross, it was their nemesis Casper Jones who haunted them again proving to be the match winner on the day.
CANOEING
Gary Price, the new Chairman of the Open Canoe Association, a national organisation which held their 60th anniversary festival in Ross-on-Wye, told the Ross Gazette that it had been a fantastic site for the event and he would very much like to bring future events to the town. There were workshops to develop skills, demonstrations and a chance to try different boats, along with chances to learn bushcraft and camping craft, even how to make wooden boats. Two internationally renowned paddlers from Canada were also at the festival.
ROWING
ROSS Rowing Club took 22 crews to Evesham Regatta last weekend, coming away with seven wins. On a sunny Saturday, Mike Jones rowed well in the Masters single scull against an old adversary but lost narrowly.
