Many of the Ross sports teams enjoyed success this weekend.
FOOTBALL
Ross Juniors under 8s played in a six-team group at the Cinderford Town Youth FC tournament. This non-competitive tournament consisted of ten minute games, one way, 5-a-side games, all played at a frenetic pace.
Hereford FC are not the only team in Herefordshire to complete a tremendous league campaign this week. Ross Juniors Girls Under 10s won their final league match of the season 4-0, completing an incredible sequence of winning 16 out of 16 league matches.
John Kyrle Under 14s made the final of the Herefordshire School FA final played at Edgar Street on Tuesday, May 3rd. They took on White Cross, having beaten Wigmore 2-1 in the semi Final last month.
Ross Juniors Mens took on Weston under Penyard, on Saturday, May 7th. It was a close game for the two local teams, but Weston came away the victorious, winning 3 - 2.
Herefordshire Council has agreed a new 25-year lease for Victoria Park with United in the Community, the independent charitable arm and official player pathway into Hereford FC.
GOLF
A quest to win Europe’s biggest pro-am trophy begins for Tim Kefalas and his Ross-on-Wye PGA Professional, Tim Hall when they tee up in the Lombard Trophy regional final at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club on June 9th, one of 14 regional finals being staged across the UK. They will be up against 64 other clubs with the winning club going through to compete in the 36-hole final at Portugal’s luxurious Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Hotel resort on the Algarve in September.
BRIDGES
Members at a well attended Ross Bridge Club AGM were both inspired and humbled to learn of the bespoke support to disabled horse riders being provided by ’Ride 2 Achieve’ which is part of the Horse Riding for Disabled National Charity and operates from the Duchy based Redbrook Farm in Hoarwithy.
RALLYING
Local Co-driver Will Rogers experienced mixed fortunes on the recent Pirelli Rally 3rd round of the British Rally Championship. Together with Matt Edwards the duo led the Production Cup going into the Carlisle based event in the Swift Group/D Mack backed Lancer Evo 9.
CRICKET
On Thursday, April 14th, the John Kyrle Under 13 girls’ cricket team were crowned champions at the Lady Taverners indoor cricket finals against a strong and confident Wigmore team comprising of several county cricketers. Luke is now joint third in the Championships, with Luke Hedger, on 31 points. Championship leader, Andy Reid, is on 59 points. Luke’s family, and his loyal supporters were all pleased with his riding under very tricky conditions.
On a glorious Saturday afternoon Ross 1st XI entertained Malvern at The Park. Malvern won the toss and Ross were put into bat on a wicket that looked conducive to runs.
A huge thunder and lightning storm brought about an early finish to the 2nd XI game at Malvern with the square reminiscent of a boating lake after the deluge.
CYCLING
The Royal Dean Forest Cycle Club’s summer time trial series finally got started with the road works cleared from the Lydbrook course. A mild night gave a strong turn out of riders, with Earl Smith taking the win from Dave Bucknall by 15 seconds.
Five local cyclists recently joined up with Sue Brand, Chair of It’s in the Bag; a South-West based testicular cancer charity, to cycle Le Tour de Balls. This is a unique cycling event, which involved 24 cyclists riding 300 miles across the South West in three days during poor weather.
SUPERBIKES
Luke Jones, the local motor bike racer was at Oulton Park during the Bank Holiday Weekend, riding in the British Superbike Championship. Luke is now joint third in the Championships, with Luke Hedger, on 31 points. Championship leader, Andy Reid, is on 59 points. Luke’s family, and his loyal supporters were all pleased with his riding under very tricky conditions.
