Bourneville RFC 41 Newent 1st XV 19

NEWENT 1st XV travelled to Birmingham to face a Bourneville side undefeated this season at their Avery Fields ground.

Nicknamed the Choccos after the town’s famous chocolate factory, the hosts’ record remained intact as they overcame the Green Army after opening the scoring five minutes in when flanker Christopher Idchen crossed for a converted try.

Newent were back on level terms after a quarter of an hour when Bourneville were penalised for a high tackle on winger Kyle Towers.

Full-back Doug Long sent the ball to the 10m line where it was safely gathered at the line-out and spun out to the left wing before being taken back into the centre, where hooker Ethan Allen deftly slipped a pass around the back to Nathan Brooks, who sliced through the defence to score under the posts, giving Long the simplest of kicks.

Bourneville retook the lead four minutes later from the tee, before extending it to 10 points on 21 minutes with a converted try when Nathan Declaimer went down the wing to score the first of his three tries.

Newent reduced the deficit after the ball was run out defence and a cross field kick was gathered by Long, before Allen sold a dummy to make space to run over the line.

Long added the extras with a conversion from wide on the right for 17-12, but Bourneville scored another converted try to make it 24-12 at the break.

Newent hit back though after the restart when prop Garrett Myers ran through from the edge of the 22 for a converted try.

But Bourneville added two more tries and a penalty to close out the victory.

Newent host Drybrook, who lost 32-15 at home to Bromsgrove at the weekend, in a mouthwatering Forest derby this Saturday (October 25), while Ross-on-Wye RFC host Drybrook 3rds.
