Ross kept up the pressure on League leaders Colstonians, with a very convincing 64-10 win, at home, against Westbry. Apart from a late, two try rally in the last quarter the visitors were second best on Saturday, with Ross running in ten quality tries.
As the scoreline suggests it did not take Ross long to open their account. After some strong ball carrying by Luke Ward and Casey Morgan put Ross deep into Westburys half, the ball was moved right, and centre, Thai Hayward, kept the defence honest before timing a great pass to Marcus Barnard. He burst through a hole in the defence to score. Thai then went from supplier to scorer, getting on the end of some slick passing to get outside the defence and have the pace to run in the score from 30 metres.
Westbury were not able to relieve the pressure. With Ross dominating possession, and with Luke Ward, Casey Morgan and Josh Element carrying the ball hard into the Westbury defence, it was only a matter of time before Marcus Barnard latched onto another slick passing move to score.
As halftime loomed good old fashioned grunt up front saw Chris Price crash over to score, and at the break Ross were 22-0 ahead.
The second half was a repeat of the first. Ross continued to dominate possession and their passing and offloading game became impossible to stop.
Marcus Barnard added a third try for him, and fifth for Ross, before capping off a great performance in finishing by running in a fourth try. Chay Brine came off the bench and ran a sumptous line, taking a well timed pass from Matt King, before running in from 50 metres. Then captain Casey Morgan got in on the act with another try.
Westbury did hit back with two well deserved tries but as they pressed for a third Aaron Ryder intercepted a pass deep in Ross’s twenty two and had the pace to run in from 90 metres. Josh Element got the last score, taking a pass from his brother, Ben, and with Aaron knocking six from six in the second half Ross added 42 points to their 22 in the first, running out 64-10 winners.
Ross’s man of the match was Luke Ward, who was tireless in defence and with ball in hand. On Saturday both Ross 1sts and 2nds are away to Smiths of Cheltenham.
