Ross Rugby Club’s victory last Saturday, April 7th, against the Aretians, saw them confirmed as league champions with two games remaining. Their win, 68-0, opened up an 18 point lead at the top of the table over nearest rivals Smiths.
The heavy morning rain cleared for the start of the game. Aretians made Ross work hard for the first quarter, but once Ross put pace and tempo into the game, the tries, ten in all, came at regular intervals. Both lineout and scrum were functioning well. Ross had a steady stream of good possession, which they used well, keeping the ball in hand and in play.
PJ Muldowney opened the scoring for Ross after some good passing interplay by Thai Hayward and Matt King.
PJ was put clear and outpaced the defence to score in the corner. Thai Hayward added a lovely conversion and Ross went 7-0 ahead. Aretians continued to work hard but could not stop a steady stream of Ross possession, and the tries kept coming.
PJ added another two, to secure his second hat trick of the season. Matt King, Thai Hayward, Ben Element, Alex Davies, AJ and Marcus Barnard got one apiece and Prop, Jonnie Baynham, got on the score card with a ‘Usian Bolt’ style 25 metre charge to the line.
Thai Hayward had a great day, with his boot converting nine of the ten tries.
The A Davies Construction Man of the match was PJ Muldowney for his three well taken tries.
