The final Super Sunday of the season was held on October 30th at Droitwich. This tournament involves all the Midland teams and with three teams level on points, Ross-on-Wye, Pershore and Stratford, at the top of the table there was everything to play for.

Despite winning all their pool games and the semi-final and the final ending in a draw, Ross were just beaten to the title in a sudden death play off.

Ross Ladies’ opening game was against Wellsbourne, who had finished joint runners up in their respective Northern Midlands League competition. Ross applied huge pressure and were able to get on top very early in the game, Ross seemed to control the game from then on and ran out with a very solid opening victory Ross 4, Wellsbourne 0.

The second game saw Ross play against the winners of the Northern Midlands League – Stratford. This was a great game of attacking rugby and thanks to a magnificent defence and players keeping the ball alive in attacking situations there were two touchdowns either side of half time. The final score was Ross 2, Stratford 0

The third game was played against Hereford Greyhounds who play their rugby with Ross in the Southern League. A good game and some great attacking play saw Ross ease to a comfortable victory without conceding Ross 4, Greyhounds 0.

The final game in the pool group was against Berkeswell and Balsall, a team that plays in the Northern Midlands League. Ross was able to mix it up a bit and produce some great attacking rugby and some lovely worked tries. Their defence was breached once but by this time their victory had already been sealed. Ross 4, Berkeswell and Balsall 1.

This great run of wins meant that Ross was in the semi-final against Redditch. This is a team that plays in the Northern Midlands League and had finished joint top with Stratford, but lost on a sudden death playoff for the league title.

Redditch were very strong and kept the ball alive very well and played at great pace. Ross kept a great defensive line and scored a fantastic try after some great attacking pressure. Redditch continued to pile on the pressure and managed to sneak around the outside to score a controversial try, with the Ross defence claiming to have called the touch before the ball was grounded.

This seemed to make Ross more determined and within a few seconds of the restart created a great overlap to score in the corner and give Ross a place in the final. Ross 2, Redditch 1.

Ross had got through to the final against Pershore. This is a very tight fixture which had been played all season, with equal amounts of victories for each team.

Ross opened the scoring with an extremely well worked try, with the ball being moved at speed to the wing to create an overlap for a wonderful team try. However Pershore hit back straight from the restart to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams then had a few opportunities to win but the final whistle went and the scores were tied.

The teams then had to play a sudden death play off, with teams reducing by one player every minute until they play three aside. However after two minutes Pershore managed to breach the Ross defence to take the tournament, and with that the Midland Super Sunday title.

The Ross player of the tournament was Henny Vine. Ross have had an unbelievable season, They have been winners or runners up in every tournament they have entered, taking a trophy home from every tournament.

At the start of the season a 138 try haul for the season would have been thought somewhat unrealistic and by achieving runner up status in the Midland Super Sunday shows how far the team has developed.

Thoughts have already turned to the 2017 season beginning in March, and working hard through the closed season to improve and face the real possibility of taking the title next season.
