Ross-on-Wye RFC Ladies were yet again able to field two teams from their ever growing squad to play at Greyhounds. The improvement in the Ross B side is already being realised with a fantastic mix of experienced and novice players and a few of the younger members are able to become involved in the whole squad performance.
Both Henny Vine and Emily Germaney were instrumental in this.
Ross A began the day with a bye, then their opening game in round 2 was against Pershore. The first half saw Ross dominate and they soon opened the scoring, and this quickly followed by another try. A third try for Ross was disallowed before Pershore managed to get one back. The game finished and Ross had won 2-1.
Their second game was against Luctonians and following the euphoria of beating Pershore, the game was a little flat. Ross only just managed to sneak over the line with a 1-0 win, although they never really looked like conceding, they agreed that was a little close for comfort.
The third game against Greyhounds was a try fest with some great running rugby, some fantastic possession and with very little to defend. Several sublime tries were scored to give a great win of 6-0.
The fourth game was against Ross B, and was played in a great spirit, both teams had several great periods of possession. Two members of the B team were able to score, Alex Harrington and Henny Vine, but the pace of Ross A won through.
The fifth game against Bredon saw a very tight first half with both Ross and Bredon scoring, however, in the second half the speed of movement from the Ross attack was too quick for the Bredon defence. Ross ran in two tries to finish the game with another win, 3-1.
The sixth and final game was against Berryhill. Ross attacked for the whole game and produced a flurry of tries, it was great to watch the ladies trying various moves and in many cases succeeding and slicing the Berryhill defence wide open on many occasions. They finished the game, and the tournament with an outstanding 8-0 victory.
This meant that Ross had won another tournament and the girls were thrilled, however it also meant they had tied with Pershore on equal points. Despite a protest from Ross, who wanted to share the trophy, it was decided that a final match playoff would decide the overall league winner for 2016.
In a very tense match, Pershore opened the scoring in the first half before Ross hit back in the second. However, in the dying minutes of the game Pershore scored a decisive touchdown to win the playoff and the league.
Obviously disappointed, the girls soon rallied round and enjoyed looking back over a very successful season.
The overall Midlands champions is still to play for on Sunday, October 30th, to be held in Droitwich.
The Ross A: Player of the tournament is Adie Batt and the Ross B: Player of the tournament is Mel Lyddon.
