Ross secured the top spot in their league on Saturday with a game to spare.

They claimed the title for the second consecutive year with a 20-12 win over Brocksworth. But, whether it was nerves or complacency, Ross made hard work of securing the league title against a Brockworth side who were determined to make Ross work hard.

Brockworth were the first to score after a break by their ten and very nearly added a second score shortly after but their winger dropped the scoring pass, so at the end of a difficult first quarter Ross were thankfully only 7-0 down. They began to work themselves back into the game in the second quarter. Thai Hayward converted a penalty, then winger Craig Smith squeezed over in the corner to score and take Ross finally into the lead 8-7, just before the break.

Craig added a second, which Thai converted from the touchline and Ross went into half time 15-7 ahead.

However, for all their efforts Ross were unable to shake off a determined Brockworth in the third quarter, and as it wasn’t until the 65th minute that captain Casey Morgan extended their lead. He crashed over after a series of rucks close to the visitors’ line which put Ross 20-7 ahead.

Brockworth added a late try but Ross were able to run down the clock and secure their second league title success in two years.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
