Ross 33 - Smiths Cheltenham 24: Ross extended their unbeaten run in the league to seven wins on the bounce with an hard fought away win in Cheltenham. Ross started poorly, a number of errors saw the hosts deep in the Ross twenty two and with less than five minutes on the clock Smiths had scored under the posts and were 7-0 up.
For the rest of the opening quarter, Ross were unable to get their direct attacking game into gear. Fortunately, their defence held firm and Smiths were unable to add to their lead. A Thai Hayward penalty saw Ross peg the hosts back to 7-3, and after what seemed an age, Ross began to string some phases together and started to enjoy some possession in the Smiths half. With less than ten minutes to the break Ross took the lead.
Scrum half, Ben Element, moved the ball quickly to fly half, Thai, who delivered a well timed pass to centre Dan Field, who darted through the midfield defence like a knife through butter, to score under the posts. Thai added the two and Ross went into the break 10-7 ahead.
Ross held their nerve and pinned Smiths back into their half with a combination of a good kicking game and retaining possession when they had the ball.
This combination was too much for a now tiring Smiths defence, and scrum half Ben Element was able to score two close range tries which were both converted by Thai Hayward to put Ross 33-14 clear. A late Smiths’ try and penalty brought them within nine points, but a great turnover from Josh Walker snuffed out one last Smiths attack and Ross were able to close the game out.
Ross 56 - Bredon Star 12: The following weekend, Ross earned a convincing win against Bredon Star. Ross found themselves top of the table after ten games. Ross were quickly into their stride. Receiving the kick off, they secured the ball and Thai put a killer clearing kick sixty yards into their 22. Bredon failed to exit and when the ball was turned over winger Craig Smith scored in the corner to put Ross 5-0 up. Bredon had a number of big ball carriers who challenged the Ross defence, but they held firm and Gavin Oates added another try as Ross went 19 points clear.
As the match continued, some infringements led to the referee awarding a penalty try, bringing Bredon back to 19-7. Ross hit back with another try just before the break as Chris Price crashed over and Ross were 26-7 ahead at the break.
Ross dominated the second half with further tries from Gavin Oates, Chris Price, Chris Thomas, Craig Smith and Matt King. The David Cooke man of the match was Thai Hayward who marshalled play well at outside half.
