After a hard first half of the season for both Senior Mens teams, it was time to renew ancient rivalries as the Spring chickens took on the Mature cheeses on Boxing Day afternoon.
An expectant crowd assembled looking forward to a feast of rugby, and the assembled thirty athletes did not disappoint, either that or it was the lashings of Port that created the illusion. It was the wily mature chesses who took the early spoils; Tim Hanks carved his way through the spring chicken defence, before realising the enormity of what he had done …… left himself a 65 yard run to the line. However, surprising himself as much as anyone, he managed to get to the line and open the scoring. With gas still left in the tank the Mature Cheeses struck again to increase their lead to 12-0.
However it was the Spring chickens who had the ace card in young Max Morgan, who either side of half time scored three superb tries showing up his old man Casey how it is done. They went further ahead when the referee Steve sent Keith Scrivens over to score, however the Mature Cheeses hit back a combination of Port, cod liver oil and sanatogen kicked in and delivered a new lease of life. Tries from Wes Parker, Craig Smith and Gareth Holdsworth saw the Mature Cheeses deliver a narrow victory which was debated with equal vigour back at the Drop Inn.
Ross Rugby Club would like to say a big thank you for Rob Brehony who ably manned the kitchen keeping supporters satiated with Pork rolls and tea, coffee and a nip of Port.
All at Ross on wye RFC would like to wish, players, officials, sponsors, supporters and volunteers a Happy New Year.
The next game is on January 5th, Greytree 2.30pm as Ross entertain Cirencester.
